First run in 1780, the race is named after the twelfth Earl of Derby, Edward Smith Stanley. Legend has it that a coin toss decided who the race would be named after. The man who called “heads” and lost was Sir Charles Bunbury. Sir Charles’ luck wasn’t all that bad though as the very first Epsom Derby was won by his horse, Diomed.
