Some Epsom Derby Facts

Just as with other great racing events, like the Grand National, bookmakers on course will be taking bets on their Epsom Derby odds 2013 first thing – which highlights its importance in that day of racing. There are, of course, more support races that take place around the main event which are also very hotly contested.

The Coronation Cup takes place over the same course and distance.  It is, however, a race for four-year-olds and over (compared with the Epsom Derby which is  for three-year-olds).  It is often popular with race-goers as it often features horses from the previous year’s Derby and Oaks who are now too old for them!

One of the biggest other races of the meeting is the Dash, taking place over the fastest 5f in the world. It never fails to get the crowd going just prior to the Derby.

The Epsom Derby was first run in 1780.  It was at a party to celebrate the first running of the Oaks Stakes in 1779 that guests planned a new race.  it was named after the twelfth Earl of Derby, Edward Smith Stanley. Legend has it that a coin toss decided who the race would be named after. Sir Charles Bunbury was the man who lost the coin toss but his horse, Diomed, then went on to win the very first Derby! That was the 4th of May 1780 and he also won prize money of £1,065 15s which must have cheered him up immensely.  The Earl of Derby’s horse Sir Peter Teazle won the race in 1787.

The Epsom Derby attracts a crowd with of 125,000 plus patrons descending on the Downs on Derby Day.

The current distance of 1.5 miles has been in place since 1784, and prior to this the race was a single mile.

The Oaks Stakes is still run, on the Friday, and is known today also as Ladies Day. It is in fact a year older than the better known Derby Stakes and you can expect to see high fashion and a lot of accompanying hats.

On the Saturday, the feature race of the meeting takes place – The Epsom Derby.

Such is the success of The Derby that 140 other countries now hold their own “Derby”. This Epsom Derby Odds 2013 and free bets review ends here. Good luck and may you back the winning horse!
